DAVID GRAY
TOURING AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND IN APRIL 2006
“Gray is undeniably a born performer. Let any critic try and deny the warmth and familiar everyman connection he forges between himself and the crowd with his quietly affecting symphonies – a rarity in these days of overly stylised, cynically manufactured rock posturing.”
ic Wales Review – December 2005
It’s no small secret that David Gray is returning to Australia in April to appear at the annual East Coast Blues and Roots Festival. But what has remained a mystery until this point is whether or not David would perform solo shows whilst on Australian soil.
The Frontier Touring Company is now pleased to put an end to such hopeful whispers with the announcement of a David Gray Australasian Tour. The tour will see the talented singer-songwriter and his full band play two additional Australian dates in Sydney and Melbourne along with several New Zealand dates on a national tour.
It was over five years ago that Australians and New Zealanders first sat up and took notice of the remarkable Mr Gray. The moment was the release of David’s fourth album White Ladder, and it won him a huge international following. This was an album that commanded attention, that ignited sentiment and emotion…that sold more than 6 million copies! The album struck a chord with both the public and critics alike, winning David two Ivor Novello awards, a Q award, a GQ award, two Brit nominations and a Grammy nomination.
But there is a lot more to David Gray than one album. In fact David released three brilliant albums before White Ladder, and he has released three equally stunning ones since. The latest of these Life in Slow Motion (out now through Warner) – from which the hit single “The One I Love” is taken – highlights his ongoing development as one of the world’s leading singer-songwriters. The album also features his new radio single “Hospital Food”, which has already gained high rotation on-air.
Reviews of David’s recent performances overseas indicate that his new material is ideal for the larger venues that demand has necessitated he play:
“The songs from his most recent collection Life in Slow Motion hint at a departure from the more stripped down moments of his previous albums and these new songs backed by a full band sound lush and full, befitting of arenas.” ic Wales Review – December 2005
“How can one small singer- songwriter fill such a big space? Here’s the answer: There’s nothing small about him. His songs are full of oversize moments and striking crescendos; if he sometimes sings softly, it’s only so you’ll be more excited when he grows loud. He had a full band at Radio City, but whether he was playing guitar or piano, he seemed like a band unto himself.” New York Times Review – October 2005
“Last night… Gray kicked it up a major notch, bringing his A-game, complete with blinding lights, moody backdrops, a bigger, more dramatic sound, and last but hardly least, his beautiful, soulful voice.” Jam! Review – October 2005
Support for David Gray on his Australasian tour will be provided by two of Australia’s finest musicians. Lior has the honours for Sydney and Melbourne; Pete Murray for New Zealand.
With a sweet, soulful voice, Lior is fast developing a reputation as one of Australia’s best live performers. His debut gold-selling album Autumn Flow secured him ARIA nominations for Best Male Artist, Best Independent Release and Best Break Through Artist. With hits including “This Old Love” “Autumn Flow” and “Superficial” Lior is definitely a must-see on this tour.
A similarly talented performer is Pete Murray. Pete’s debut album Feeler struck a chord with the New Zealand public, achieving double platinum sales. In Australia, the album went six times platinum! Pete’s latest release See the Sun promises to be just as successful with first single “Better Days” securing strong radio-play.
Make sure you don’t miss David Gray performing live this April with Lior (in Australia) and Pete Murray (in New Zealand). These are sure to be some truly magical shows!
